Tikoy or nian gao is made from glutinous rice cake and the Chinese believes it symbolizes good fortune in all aspects of life and creates a healthy bond within and among family members as well as in relationships.
The name nian gao also means “getting higher on year” in Chinese. The Philippines since the dawn of time has cultivated rice as its staple food like the Chinese. The Chinese sticky rice called Nian Gao has found its Filipino counterpart in “Tikoy” (from the Cantonese term “Ti” and “Ke”, meaning sweetcake. This sticky food is served during Chinese New Year to promote “togetherness of the family” throughout the year.
