The ‘White Tiger Orchid’ of the Philippines: An Enchanting Spectacle at The Manila Hotel

The Manila Hotel, an icon of history, elegance, and natural splendor, is delighted to showcase the majestic ‘White Tiger Orchid’ of the Philippines. This enchanting floral spectacle is set to gracefully adorn the hotel’s lobby, creating a captivating ambiance for visitors and guests.

With its breathtaking beauty and rare allure, the ‘White Tiger Orchid’ has long captured the hearts of flower enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Originating from the lush landscapes of the Philippines, Grammatophyllum wallisii is one of the world’s largest orchids in terms of its massive plant size and flower production.

It is a giant pseudobulbous epiphyte most often found growing on large trees in lowland rainforests, where its thick, cane-like stems may be seen rising to a staggering height up to 10 feet, with long, slender leaves forming a perfect fan-like foil for large and striking ivory-white flowers, heavily marked in deep maroon, hence their popular comparison to the color pattern of a White Tiger. The four-inch flowers are arranged spirally on long upright inflorescences, each displaying as many as 60 fragrant blooms, which emit a light yet pervasive scent, reminiscent of jasmine.

This species was described in 1876 by the eminent botanist Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach, who named it in honor of German plant collector Gustav Wallis (1830-78).

This extraordinary exhibition features 840 flowers on 14 inflorescences and 960 flowers on 16 inflorescences, respectively, creating a breathtaking display that celebrates the country’s rich floral heritage.

Catch the ‘White Tiger Orchid’ display at the lobby of The Manila Hotel until July 4, 2023. Admission is free.
